Orange or rust-coloured specks on white, silver or light paint, especially on the rear and lower panels, are not rust coming from your car. They are tiny iron particles that have landed on the surface and bonded to it. This is iron fallout, and washing alone will not remove it.
What causes iron fallout
Brake dust from other vehicles, rail dust, industrial fallout and general road grime all contain iron particles. They land on paint, embed in the clear coat, and begin to oxidise, which is what gives the orange spotting. Wheels are hit hardest because brake dust is produced right next to them.
How to tell if you have it
- Orange or brown specks that do not wash off, most visible on light-coloured paint.
- A rough, gritty feel on clean paint, especially when you run your hand over it in a thin plastic bag.
- Brown staining around wheel centres and on the lower doors.
How to remove it with Vonixx Izer
- Wash the car first to remove loose dirt, so the remover can reach the contamination.
- Work on cool paint, out of direct sun. The product must not dry on the surface.
- Spray Vonixx Izer evenly over the panel, working a section at a time on larger cars.
- Leave it for 3 to 5 minutes. It reacts with the iron and runs purple. That colour change is the product working.
- Agitate stubborn areas gently. On wheels, a finger mitt reaches into spokes and corners.
- Rinse thoroughly before it dries.
Izer has a distinctive smell. That is normal and it is not a sign something has gone wrong.
What to do after
Decontamination strips away what was bonded to the paint, so follow it up. If tar spots remain, use Vonixx Strike, and then protect the paint with a wax or sealant so contamination has less to grip next time.
How often should you do it
A few times a year is enough for most cars, more if the car is parked near railways, building sites or heavy traffic, or if you notice the specks returning.
Frequently asked questions
Will it damage my paint?
Izer is pH neutral and designed for automotive paint when used as directed. Do not let it dry on the surface.
Can I use it on wheels?
Yes. Wheels are where iron fallout is heaviest.
Why do the specks come back?
Because new particles land all the time. Regular washing and a protective layer slow it down.
