How to Remove Tar, Glue and Sticker Residue From Car Paint

How to Remove Tar, Glue and Sticker Residue From Car Paint

Black dots along the sills and rear arches, or a sticky square left behind by a parking permit: tar and adhesive are among the most stubborn contamination on a car. A normal wash will not touch them, and scrubbing risks scratching the paint. A dedicated solvent does the work for you.

What tar and adhesive are

Road tar is thrown up from freshly laid or hot road surfaces and bonds to the lower panels. Adhesive residue comes from stickers, tape, badges and dealer decals. Both are sticky, oily materials that dissolve in the right solvent.

How to remove them with Vonixx Strike

  1. Wash the car first so you are not grinding grit into the paint.
  2. Work on cool paint, out of the sun.
  3. Spray Vonixx Strike directly onto the tar or residue.
  4. Leave it for 30 to 60 seconds so the solvent can soften it.
  5. Wipe with a folded microfibre using light pressure. Fold the cloth to a clean face as it picks up residue.
  6. Repeat if needed rather than pressing harder.
  7. Wash the area again to remove the solvent residue.

Re-protect afterwards

Strike will strip wax or sealant from the area where you use it, so re-apply protection. A quick option is Vonixx Blend Ceramic & Carnauba Spray Wax, or use your normal sealant or wax.

Where not to use it

Keep Strike off headlights and any polycarbonate, which solvents can cloud or damage. Test on a small hidden area if you are unsure about a repainted panel or a wrap.

Removing tar and fallout together

If the car also has orange specks, deal with those first using our iron fallout guide, then come back to remaining tar with Strike.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use WD-40 or white spirit?

We would not. They leave an oily film and can be harsh on some finishes. A purpose-made remover is the safer choice.

Will it damage the clear coat?

Used as directed and not left to dry, no. Always wash it off afterwards.

How do I remove a sticker?

Peel what you can, then treat the remaining adhesive with Strike as above.
