Vacuuming only removes what's sitting on top. The staining and odour in a car's interior live deeper — ground into the fibres of seats, carpets and mats. Getting that out is what separates a quick tidy from a proper deep clean, and it doesn't need expensive machines.
The method: agitate, then extract
Professional interior cleaning is a two-part process. First you agitate — work a cleaning solution into the fibres to break dirt loose. Then you extract — pull the dirty moisture back out so it doesn't sit in the fabric.
Step 1: Vacuum thoroughly
Remove the mats, vacuum everything, and use a slim interior detail brush to flick dust out of vents, seams, cup holders and switch gaps as you go — the places a vacuum nozzle can't reach.
Step 2: Agitate with a drill brush
Spray your upholstery or all-purpose cleaner onto the seat or carpet, then run a drill brush over the area on a medium speed. The set's three sizes cover flat seat bases, narrow bolsters and footwell corners. Thirty seconds of drill brush does what ten minutes of hand scrubbing can't — you'll see the dirt foam up out of the fibres.
Go gently on delicate fabrics and test somewhere hidden first. For leather, skip the drill and use a soft hand brush instead.
Step 3: Extract the dirty water
This is the step most people skip — and it's why DIY seat cleaning often leaves watermarks and a damp smell. An extractor attachment for a wet & dry vacuum turns the machine you may already own into an upholstery extractor: mist the area with clean water, then draw the moisture out. Keep passing until the water pulls clear.

Step 4: Dry properly
Leave doors open for an hour or run the heater with windows cracked. Fabric should be dry to the touch the same day — damp interiors breed odour.
