Snow Foam Explained: What It Is and How to Use a Foam Cannon

If you only add one thing to your home wash routine, make it snow foam. It's the pre-wash step professionals never skip, and the reason a pro-washed car picks up fewer swirl marks over time.

What snow foam actually does

Snow foam is a thick, clinging pre-wash foam applied to a dirty car before you touch it. As it dwells, it softens and lifts road grime, traffic film and loose dirt, then carries it off when you rinse. The result: when your wash mitt finally touches the paint, most of the abrasive dirt is already gone.

It is not a replacement for a contact wash, it's the step that makes your contact wash safe.

What you need

A pressure washer, a foam cannon like our Easy Lock Snow Foam Cannon, and a snow foam solution. The cannon connects with a 1/4" quick-release fitting, so if your pressure washer gun doesn't have a quick-release socket, an MCX 5000 PSI detailing spray gun with one included makes swapping between foam and rinse effortless.

For the solution itself, Vireto DRIFT is a British-made concentrate that dilutes up to 50:1 and is safe on wraps, PPF and ceramic coatings. Being a concentrate, 500ml is a working bottle rather than a sample.

How to use it

1. Mix. Follow your foam's dilution instructions, typically 1 to 2 inches of product in the bottle, topped up with warm water. Measuring marks on the bottle keep it consistent.

2. Rinse the car first. Knock off the loose dirt so the foam can work on what's bonded.

3. Foam the whole car, bottom to top. Working upwards gives even coverage without streaks. Adjust the cannon's dial for a thick, shaving-foam consistency.

4. Let it dwell 3 to 5 minutes. The foam should slide slowly down the panel, pulling dirt with it. Don't let it dry, on a hot day, work in the shade.

5. Rinse thoroughly, top to bottom. Then move on to your two-bucket contact wash (see our swirl-free washing guide).

Pro tip: run two cannons

On valets we keep two cannons mixed and ready, one with snow foam and one with diluted wheel cleaner, and swap between them on the gun. It saves emptying, rinsing and remixing a single bottle halfway through a car, and it stops a strong wheel cleaner ever ending up in your paint foam. Browse the snow foam cannons to see the options.

Common mistakes

Foaming a bone-dry, filthy car (rinse first); letting the foam dry in the sun; using too little product so the foam runs straight off; and skipping the contact wash afterwards, because foam alone won't remove bonded traffic film.

If you want the pre-wash in the context of a full three-stage wash, the Vireto DRIFT, FORGE and SURGE guide runs through wheels, pre-wash and contact wash in order.
