Snow Foam Cannons Compared: Easy Lock vs Tstar vs Avalanche Pro

A snow foam cannon is the single biggest safety upgrade you can make to a wash. Thick foam sits on the panel, softens the grit and lifts it off before a mitt ever touches the paint, and grit dragged across paint is where almost every swirl mark comes from.

All three cannons we stock hold a litre and clip onto a standard 1/4" quick connect. The differences are in how the bottle attaches, what the body is made of, and how much control you get over the foam. Here they are side by side.

Which snow foam cannon should I buy?

Short version: the Tstar for the thickest and most controllable foam, the Easy Lock if you refill constantly, and the Avalanche Pro if you want one bottle that does more than foam.

What makes the Tstar produce thicker foam?

The independent air intake valve. Foam is soap, water and air mixed together, and the ratio of air is what decides whether you get shaving cream or a wet dribble. Most cannons fix that ratio; the Tstar lets you set it.

Combined with the dial on top, you can go thicker or wetter partway through a car without stopping to remix the bottle. On a filthy winter car you want it wetter so it flows into the dirt; on a maintenance wash you want it thick so it clings and dwells.

The body is cast stainless steel rather than plastic or plated alloy. That is the practical difference over a Scottish winter, because road salt seizes plated cannons and this one shrugs it off.

Why choose the Easy Lock cannon?

One reason, and it is a good one: the bottle locks on and off with a quarter turn. No threads to line up, no cross-threading, no leaks down the outside of the bottle.

If you are doing several cars, or mixing different products for wheels and bodywork, you are unscrewing that bottle a lot. A quarter turn instead of six is a small saving that repeats all day. It comes in pink or blue, which matters more than people admit when you are running two mixes and need to tell them apart at a glance.

What does 3-in-1 mean on the Avalanche Pro?

It means the bottle is not locked into foam duty. You can run it as a foam cannon, as a neat-solution sprayer for undiluted product, or direct-connect for shampoo. The rotary nozzle switches between a jet and a mist pattern.

The snap-lock mouth is the same idea as the Easy Lock, click on and click off. Where it earns its place is if you want one bottle covering several jobs instead of buying a separate sprayer.

How much shampoo do I put in a foam cannon?

Most concentrated shampoos foam at around 1:20 in the cannon, which is roughly 50ml of product in a 1-litre bottle, topped up with warm water. Warm, not hot.

Check the specific product, because dilution varies:

  • Vonixx V-Floc, 1:20 in a cannon. pH-neutral, safe over wax and ceramic.
  • Vonixx V-Mol, 1:10 for heavy dirt, 1:50 average. The one for mud and 4x4s.
  • Vonixx Citron, 1:10 heavy, 1:100 light. A strip wash, so not for use over fresh protection.

Fill with water first and add the shampoo second. Pouring shampoo into an empty bottle makes it foam up before you have finished filling it.

How long should snow foam dwell?

Three to five minutes, and never let it dry on the paint.

The foam works while it is wet, and as it runs down the panel it carries loosened grit with it. Once it dries, that grit is sitting on the paint again and you have made the problem worse. In direct sun or on a hot panel, cut the time short and rinse.

Foam is a pre-wash, not the wash. After rinsing, you still do a contact wash with an MCX microfibre wash mitt.

Will a foam cannon fit my pressure washer?

All three use a 1/4" quick connect, which fits any lance or gun with a standard quick-release fitting.

Karcher owners need the Karcher Adapter, because Karcher use their own bayonet fitting, so no standard cannon connects without it.

If you are upgrading the gun at the same time, the YISHI G25 is bundled with a cannon for £50, which is less than buying the two separately.

Why is my snow foam thin and watery?

Almost always one of four things:

  • Too little product. Below about 1:30 most shampoos stop foaming properly.
  • Cold water. Warm water dissolves the concentrate and foams noticeably better.
  • The wrong shampoo. A bucket shampoo is not built to foam. Use one rated for a cannon.
  • Low machine flow. A cannon needs volume as well as pressure. Some small domestic washers simply cannot feed one properly, and no adjustment will fix that.

If it is none of those, the adjustment is set wrong, so open the dial fully and work back from there.
